It is a surreal moment when you are The Most Southern Person on Earth. You will be standing on a 3-kilometer slab of ice at 2,800 meters in altitude, posing next to a USA flag and comfortable new building.... You can dance around the world, hug the world, do yoga poses, play air guitar or get a photo in your birthday suit (locally known as a "hero shot").
Adventurous folks may chose to ski, drive or even run a marathon there. Sounds too hard? These days the South Pole is within anyone's reach if you go by aircraft. It seems almost ridiculously easy these days after hearing epic tales of the race to the South Pole by the explorers Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest Shackleton and the ultimate victor, Roald Amundsen.
Only a week to spare to get there? You can book a flight from Puerta Arenas, Chile to the South Pole via a glacial camp. Multiple companies now offer this tour for a mere US$40,000+. Your experience may include a couple of hours at the Pole, a quick visit to the souvenir shop in the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, and even a cup of tea.
Don't have this chunk of spare change? You could do what I did and work for the United States Antarctic Program for a summer season. The major advantages are you get paid to go there, and you get to experience life as a Polie.
