South Park Natural Area

I love South Park. I run through the park nearly every day, take first-time visitors out here to peek into the creek and to spy the incredible Bighorn Mountain views, shoot as many photos as my friends and family will allow (if there’s a better place to photograph someone within city limits, I haven’t seen it), and find time now and again to try my luck on the great tire swing suspended above the creek – though only in the summer, when I’m sure the mountains are not sending iceberg-cold water Sheridan’s way. South Park is primarily a natural area, and other than the paved trail and a few benches, it is a beautifully simple space, notable for an abundance of trees, tall grass, and wetland areas. Locals love South Park for all the same reasons I do, though some folks take their love affair with the park to a whole other level; it’s not uncommon to see groups of young folk, dressed in medieval garb, speaking in strange tongues, going all sorts of renaissance fair on one another. Truly entertaining if you’re lucky enough to be strolling through the park during a showdown.
