South African National Art Gallery
South Africa's premier art museum houses collections of South African, African, British, French, Dutch, and Flemish art. Selections from the permanent collection change regularly to let the museum showcase pieces, which include local luminaries like Walter Battiss, Maggie Laubser, Cecil Higgs, Edward Roworth, Sydney Kumalo, Ephraim Ngatane, and Cecil Skotnes. The museum also has a notable historical painting and sculpture collection and a large African collection, and holds a wide variety of temporary exhibitions. Art aficionados might also visit the Irma Stern Museum, in the Rosebank home of one of the country’s most celebrated artists, where you can see paintings and sculptures heavily influenced by her travels in Africa as well as her own collections.
