Ski Train to the Slopes: Winter Park Resort ExpressRiding the rails to reach a ski resort is a unique to Winter Park experience. Operating Friday, Saturday and Sunday Jan and late March, the Winter Park Express ski train runs from Denver directly to the slopes at Winter Park and Mary Jane Resorts.
The only experience of its kind in Colorado, the ride starts at Union Station in the heart of Denver at 7am and arrives in Winter Park at 9am. It departs Winter Park at 4:30pm arriving at Union Station at 6:40pm. Union Station is also linked directly to Denver International Airport with a rail line, which means you can touch down from any place in the world and ride the rails to Winter Park.
The train is a double-decker Amtrak Superliner and the trip takes two hours and passes through 31 tunnels, many of which were built by hand in the remote areas. The views are stupendous and include the famed Flatirons above Boulder as it winds its way north and west, across the Continental Divide and into the Rocky Mountains and Winter Park just over 50 miles from Denver.
From the ski train platform it is only a 100 foot scramble to a ski lift, which is closer than the nearest car parking space! As for skiing, Winter Park and adjacent Mary Jane offer runs for all levels of skiers and enough terrain to keep you occupied for days on end. If you are looking to challenge yourself, and an expert skier or snowboarder then hit up the Vasquez Cirque atop the mountain. To reach this extreme inbound terrain filled with headwalls and steep chutes with epic powder stashes you’ll need to hike along the traverse starting at the top of the Panoramic lift for about a mile. The area around Eagle Wind lift is also excellent expert terrain and doesn’t require a hike to access. It does offer plenty of steep tree skiing.
