This vast national park was originally established in 1967 and became part of Vatnajökull National Park in 2008. A wonderland for hikers and nature lovers, the park features a host of hiking trails that are as varied as they are scenic, spanning short, simple trails to waterfalls and glaciers (like Svartifoss and Skaftafellsjökull, respectively) as well as harder hikes to the Morsárdalur Valley and Kristínartindar Mountain. Guided tours are available to the region’s various glaciers and mountains. The park is also used as a base camp for climbing Iceland’s highest mountain peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur. Camping here is possible, as are sightseeing flights over Vatnajökull glacier and other renowned attractions.
