Sitka History MuseumA great first stop on a visit to Sitka is the Sitka History Museum, which has a vast collection of artifacts from the region's history. These include fragments from the ship of explorer Vitus Bering, along with trade beads and other goods brought by Russian settlers. There are also items from the time of Alaska’s transfer to the United States, mining artifacts and Tlingit crafts, including halibut hooks and animal-horn spoons. While the museum is closed for renovation through the spring of 2017, their Sitka History Minutes podcasts are available on their website (sitkahistory.org) and are worth a listen whenever you are headed to Alaska.
