A day excursion to the Alcatraz of Turkey offers an eerie insight into the conditions of this former high-security state prison, which operated between 1887 and 1997. Famous inmates—poets, writers and journalists punished for their political views—were locked up here, and some of them penned some of Turkey’s most celebrated works while behind bars at this inescapable location inside the defensive walls of the fortress high above Cape Sinop.
