Opposite the central market stands another of the city’s finest commercial buildings, the Silk Exchange or La Lonja de la Seda. This historic gem was begun in 1483, the work of architect Pere Compte (who had already worked on Valencia's cathedral). The pretty Patio de los Naranjos, a courtyard with orange trees, opens onto the Sala de Contratación, a magnificent hall with a soaring vaulted roof and twisting Gothic columns where silk and other commodities were bought and sold during Valencia’s medieval heyday.
