There are few little towns that cling to their past the way Siler City, North Carolina does. The barber shop still has the original chairs purchased in 1940. The Farmer's Alliance is a full service general store featuring women's wear, men's work clothing and boots, food, cleaning supplies and candy in baskets on the counter. The gracious lady who runs the mercantile part of the store almost apologized for not being born in Siler City, She came there when she married a local, and has only been working at that store 50+ years.
The local diners feature chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy, homemade biscuits with local peach jam, and sweetened iced tea. The second time you go back, the waitress will remember your name and say "Comon in sweetie, take a seat anywhar."
It's the sort of town you would just breeze past on the four lane freeway that passes to the south, but a half day stop will transport you back to Mayberry, the people sound just like Andy Griffith. In fact, Francis Bavier, the actress who played Aunt Bea on that show lived in Siler City for many years and is buried there.
