Siegfried’s Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum, Rüdesheim, Germany
As you float from Amsterdam to Basel on Avalon Waterways’ Romantic Rhine- Southbound itinerary, you’ll have the chance to explore several noteworthy spots. But chances are nothing you see will be as quirky—or downright delightful—as Siegfried’s Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum, located in the quintessential Rhine Valley wine town of Rüdesheim, near the Rhine Gorge. Here, you’ll get to both see and hear music from a large collection of music boxes, hand-cranked carnival machines, self-playing calliopes, and antique orchestrions, mostly from the 18th-to-20th centuries. The collection was amassed by Siegfried Wendel, who since the 1960’s has been restoring discarded automatic musical instruments of all kinds. Get your eyes—and ears—ready for a one-of-a-kind experience.
