Shimabara Castle

Although the current Shimabara Castle is mostly a 1960s reconstruction of the 17th-century original, the moat and stone walls are authentic. The interior functions as a museum dedicated to the 1637 Shimabara Rebellion and features an array of fascinating artifacts such as armor and weapons that were discovered during excavations. There is also a museum spotlighting sculptures and sketches by well-known artist Seibo Kitamura, including his early designs for the Peace Park's famous sculpture.
