Sport Climbing Shelf Road
The miles of pocket- and crack-festooned limestone cliffs that fringe Shelf Road, located above Canon City, seem like they were designed with rock fiends in mind. With over 800 routes, and more being added every season, Shelf Road is one of the state’s most popular destinations for sport climbing — a discipline of the sport that uses pre-placed bolts for protection rather than removable gear, and tends towards a more gymnastic style — and during the area’s long season, its campgrounds regularly fill up with both Colorado
and out-of-state visitors. Start your explorations at Cactus Cliff, which is home to both moderate classics like LaCholla Jackson (5.9) and strenuous lines like Hot Beach (5.12b).
