New Year's celebrations on Shela Beach in Lamu, Kenya culminated in a wonderful dhow race through the channel. The winning boat was sunk according to tradition. This picture was especially hopeful as tourism has been down on the Kenyan Coast. Seeing so many tourists and so much support for this special place was really encouraging. Lamu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest living Swahili settlement in the world. Culture, history, and tradition came alive during these New Year's celebrations.
