There are some things no matter how touristy one must do. After all, these things became "touristy" for a reason, usually because they're good. Eating shave ice in Hawaii is one of those things. It's not your typical snow cone, the array of flavors alone is well beyond the characteristic cherry or lime. Then there's the chunk of ice cream found in the middle of all that cheek sucking sweetness. There are many spots that offer up authentic shave ice, but I found my heaven in the heavenly little town of Hanalei on north Kauai. There's just something to be said about eating dessert...or for your main meal (heck, it's a vacation right!), below towering cloud shrouded peaks with the sun slanting across your thatched roofed table illuminating everything in a saturated glow, and all those around you are just happy because they're eating dessert for dinner too.
