You find these alley-like narrow lanes tucked between the larger, modernized buildings. Many people in
Shanghai still live in these lanes in apartments and cook in a steamer outside and share a kitchen and hang their laundry out to dry until someone decides to develop a new shopping mall or office building, then the residents are offered a newer apartment outside of the city. It seems sad to see these old neighborhoods go, but people in Shanghai seem to embrace change (if only for lack of another option).
