Shan De Taiwan Tea

51 Gough St, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

The Newest Tea in Town

This cute little tea shop on Gough Street in Sheung Wan had only been open a few days when I wandered in on the last day of 2014. Run by a sweet couple from Taiwan who had only just moved to Hong Kong with their little girl (I think—our communication was . . . creative), the shop specializes in oolongs and red teas from Taiwan.

I tasted two lightly fermented oolongs: One was sweet and fresh and the other was a bit deeper and with a honey-like taste that, if I understood correctly, came somehow from bugs on the leaves! While the couple don't speak much English, they do have fact sheets in English about their teas.

These teas were the only two they had in stock at the time, as the rest of their inventory was still in transit. Same goes for their teaware and books about tea—there were just a few samples of each. The shop was set up in this really clean, minimal way, with plenty of wooden shelves for display. I hope to go back one day and see how they've developed it.
