Catch the migration in the Serengeti National Park
As Karen Blixen wrote in Out of Africa, "You know you are truly alive when you're living among lions.” Here in the Serengeti National Park, home to what is believed to be the highest density of lions in Africa, that statement was never more real. Some 3000 of the beasts roam the plains, their cubs tumbling around, the adult males protecting the pride, and the adult females hunting each day. The optimal time to visit the Serengeti is during the annual Great Migration, when more than a million wildebeest (as well as thousands of zebra and gazelle) cross the Mara River in search of greener grass. As awe-inspiring as it is, the brutal spectacle isn’t for the faint-hearted: Hungry lions pick off prey as they emerge from the river.
