There are endless chic, five-star hotels to lodge at in the world fashion capital of Milan. A night at the Senato, though, is an elegant twist on the family-run boutique hotel business.
Once the private home of an upper-class Milanese family, the estate still oozes with class - marble, gold, and glass fixtures strewn throughout.
The design hotel is a masterpiece by Rosalba Piccinni. But despite its modern interior, the Senato is comfortable - so much so, it feels like home. You want to sit in the lobby and read a magazine or climb to the oasis rooftop and lounge with an espresso. The cafe is plated in gold, but the bar covered in home-made pastries encourages you to stuff your face at breakfast.
The linens are that stark white you could never attain - or maintain - at home, with crisp lines only a steaming iron could smooth out. But, when you step onto herringbone parquet floors that are flooded with that unmistakably warm Italian sunlight, you feel as though you're waking up in your own villa - away from the trams, high-heeled fashionistas, and big city life just outside.
