River Purification Ceremony
Traveling in Bali requires being open to changing your plans...and being rewarded for it at every turn. On the way back to Ubud from visiting the Mother Temple, Beakih, our route was diverted, and soon we realized why. Hundreds of people had returned to the village of Rendang for an important river purification ceremony. In a processional from the village to the nearby highland river, two of these huge offerings were carried on the shoulders of the village men and overturned into the river and set ablaze. Remnants of the offerings floated down the river and local boys waded nearby to pick up any salvageable pieces of cloth, wood or even heads of statues of the gods that floated by.
