The planet's largest coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef is one of the best places on Earth to scuba dive. It is the world's largest single structure comprised of living organisms, famous among divers all over the world for its biodiversity and also revered by Australia's Aboriginal peoples as a sacred place. The Ribbon Reef, which runs for some 160 kilometers (100 miles) near Sherrard Island, is renowned for its clear visibility and the diversity of marine life found at its bommies (coral columns found in sheltered lagoons). If you're a diver, don your gear for an unforgettable experience swimming alongside sharks, rays, turtles and tropical fish through coral gardens.
