Scanno is one of the most magical villages of my travels. Perched high in the mountains of Abruzzo, the streets quietly hum with the daily life of the local people and there are surprises around each corner.
We found a gorgeous b&b (La Dimora di d'Annunzio) run by the affable Allessandra with views across snow-capped mountains and had a peaceful sleep - waking in the morning to the boisterous music of the local marching band making their way through the narrow lanes! Not sure what the occasion was, but maybe they didn't need one.
While wandering the laneways we found a biscotteria making the most delicious chocolate biscotti (which was sold by weight -I bought a kilo!), hidden taverns and silversmiths.
Lago di Scanno, Lake Scanno, is located high above sea level and a charming place - reminiscent of a 1950s holiday hotspot with pedal boats, big old trees to picnic under, lively geese and old fashioned hotels.
If you're lucky you might catch a glimpse of an older village woman wearing traditional costume - complete with turban-style headwear, seen only when you slow down and take in the magic of the this special hidden gem.
