Just north of the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County, the little town of Sausalito has an enviable location sitting on San Francisco Bay. For much of its history, Sausalito had a somewhat raffish reputation first as the home of working shipyards, and then later as a large houseboat community of residents who chose to live an offbeat life off the grid. While today Sausalito has largely been transformed into an upscale community of expensive homes, and an ideal place for lunch on a deck overlooking the bay, a number of artists' galleries and studios are reminders of the area's alternative roots.
