Sassi di Matera
Cave Town of Matera
Matera is a UNESCO site in the region of Basilicata. Noted for its intact example of troglodyte living (cave living), the first inhabited area dates all the way back to the Palaeolithic period! In the 1950s, the entire population that was still living in the caves was moved to more modern housing by the State as conditions were poor and even unhealthy. Now there has been a rebirth of the area, and the caves are being converted to stylish B&Bs, cafés and shops.
