Walk the Basque Foothills
Walk the foothills of the Pyrenees in Spanish Basque country. Set out from Hondarribia, or across the water in French Hendaye, along the GR hiking path to Sare (perhaps take a cab a few miles into the foothills to catch the trail there to knock off some time). The climb is steeper than you'd think, but takes in beautiful scenery, rolling hills, and if you are lucky, wild horses and perhaps a foggy valley or two. Stop at the Elizalde Restaurant to have a beer or stock up on snacks before continuing on your way - don't forget to check out the signs nearby to confirm your distance. From there it's another 19 kilometers/6 hours along the G10 to Sare, after you've crisscrossed the French-Spanish border multiple times. Sare is a darling Basque town in the low mountains - don't pass up a chance to try Basque cake and see the round gravestones in the cemetery in the churchyard.
