Roughly halfway between the larger cities of Manaus, in the interior of the Amazon, and Belém, on the coast, Santarém has become an increasingly popular destination in recent years. The city was founded by the Portuguese in the 17th century, and it still has a number of colorful colonial buildings. Santarém also boasts beautiful white-sand beaches, while two different rivers run parallel to each other without mixing here: the sediment-rich Amazon and the dark blue waters of the Tapajós. Though not as famous as the "meeting of the waters" near Manaus, the phenomenon is just as fascinating when witnessed here.
