Spread over 30 acres, the Santa Barbara Zoo is one of the country's best small zoos, with an emphasis on open, natural habitats for its 146 species of animals, including Asian elephants and lowland gorillas. Home to more than 500 mammals, birds, reptiles and insects, the zoo recently welcomed a trio of Asian small-clawed otter pups, and assists government agencies in monitoring California's wild species. Families can ride the zoo train, line up to feed the giraffes or take the littles to the family play area, and every summer the zoo holds Safari Sleepovers when families can camp out under the stars next to the lion exhibit! The Kids Club allows parents to take the night off while the kids experience special animal encounters and dine on pizza and s'mores.
