Well-known to locals and high-end business travelers, the Sankara is Nairobi’s most posh hotel in the hip neighborhood of Westlands.
Not commonly used by safari tour companies, I recommend a stopover here for a real taste of the city in a central area. Its located across the street from a shopping mall, craftsmarket, and one block away from neighborhood watering-holes like Gypsy Bar.
Sankara gets it right with service that is genuinely kind, concerned and prompt (the latter being a rarity in Kenya). If you want a glamorous respite for your bush-weary body, they can deliver. The gym has a sauna!
The rooftop pool shown here is flooded with chic locals and expats on Fridays and brunch on Sundays. At my time of check-out, a few famous DJs were hosting a photoshoot by the pool.
So when your tour company wants to stick you in a run-of-the-mill room near the airport, take a different route and see the ‘real’ Nairobi through a stay in Sankara in Westlands; a vibrant, big city on the rise.
