Sandy River, Oregon, USA
Sandy River Cycling RouteThis 35 mile loop ride will steal your heart. If you live in or are traveling through Portland, here's my suggested itinerary.
Head out to the McMenamins Edgefield hotel property in Troutdale. Grab some serious coffee at their espresso bar in the gift shop or sit down for a delicious breakfast in their pub or their Black Rabbit restaurant.
Once fueled, roll right out of the driveway. You'll go a few miles and end up in the heart of Troutdale and go under the famed arch. At the beginning, you'll follow the scenic byway before taking a left on E Woodard Road to escape vehicle traffic. You have a 3 mile climb here before you roll through the tiny town of Springdale and veer right on SE Hurlburt Rd. Two rolling miles on that and then a right turn on SE Gordon Creek Rd for the next 7 miles. This is where you'll see the most climbing, but it's green and gorgeous and you'll be inspired while you're suffering.
SE Gordon Creel Rd becomes SE Bull Run Rd and this is where the ferns give way to the roaring of the river to your right. Earlier in the ride you had the epic views of the Sandy River and now, you can just hear her.
Make your way to SE Lusted road for the next 4 miles and you'll be cruising. SE Oxbow Dr is the ultimate in landscape and then be sure to head north (turn right) on Troutdale Rd. to make your way back to the Edgefield. Finish with showers at the hotel and an epic brew and burger, or two.
