My favorite small town in the world. Period. Dusty and dry, located on the edge of the Atacama desert in South America’s Altiplano (High Plains) this little post-hippie adobe town has boomed in recent years as tourists have “discovered” the north of Chile. No wonder. On its edges are spectacular dry lake beds, dinosaur-ridged deserts and even geothermal geysers. Why would you take kayaks to the driest place on earth? Because some millions of years ago the region was covered by ocean, leaving behind evidence like fish fossils and coral.
