the stark dry desert of San Pedro de Atacama is one of the most beautiful places I've experienced. the air is clear, stars abundant and the small adobe town is a joy to hang out in. rent some bikes from Andes expeditions and ride through the valley of the moon; a mixture of Sand dunes and mountains with layers of exposed salt covering the dry ground. Rising from the valley floor is the volcano Licancabur.... classic cone! if you have a few days, jump on a Toyota Landcruiser trip across the salt flats to Bolivia. outfitters provide transportation, food, small refuges in the high desert over night... a trip of lifetime for sure!
