San Miniato al Monte

Church with a View
Sitting on a hill just south of the Arno with fabulous views over the city to the hills beyond, this is one of Florence’s most beautiful churches. San Miniato was built in 1015 and has an intricately patterned green-and-white marble façade with a dazzling mosaic in the center. Inside, there is a stunning marble pavement decorated with signs of the zodiac. The story of why it is named after 4th-century Saint Minias is pretty gory: legend has it that the poor guy walked up the hill from the river with his decapitated head under his arm and finally died on the spot where the church now stands.
