Every day tons of people wait in line at St. Mark's Square. Whether you're queuing to enter the Cathedral, ascend the Campanile, or visit the Doge's Palace you will probably have to wait. Those are all fantastic options but to escape the long epic crowds try a visit across the lagoon to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. The church itself is a beautiful example of Palladian Architecture—painted by artists including Monet—and well worth a tour. Be sure to save time for the Campanile, or Bell Tower, and its epic bird's-eye views. An added plus is that you get to ride the vaporetto to get here; it's especially cost effective if you have an unlimited pass.
