It may not look as imposing or impressive as larger Maya sites around Mexico, but don’t underestimate San Gervasio’s significance; this Maya site, located on Cozumel, was particularly important to Maya women because the site was where the worship of Ixchel, goddess of fertility and childbirth, was centered. Many women, in fact, would make pilgrimages to San Gervasio to pay tribute to Ixchel and ask for her favor. Go early, wear a hat and bring water; the site can get blisteringly hot.
