Float Your Boat in Golden Gate Park
Sailing on the windy waters of the San Francisco Bay is a beloved pastime, but if you can't get out there then head to Golden Gate Park, where you'll find an unassuming clubhouse on Spreckels Lake, both designed and dedicated to a niche hobby that's as fun to admire as participate in: model yachting. The club was founded in 1898, and it's the last remaining venue in the country that is home to actively racing free-sail model yachts. Member or not, you can stop in and admire the unrivaled collection of model boats, most of which are in sailing condition, then head to the lake where powerboats glide across the lake from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and sailboats from 1 p.m. onward. Regattas are held most weekends, from March to October, and the club plays host to several model boating shows throughout the year, making for a fun day out in the park for boat lovers of all ages.
