In Ranchos de Taos, the San Francisco de Asis Church is the most photographed and painted building in the state. I was once in Boston at a gallery and saw a painting that was simply a sandy-brown curve and blue sky. I knew immediately it was this church. It was painted by Georgia O'Keefe and photographed by Ansel Adams. It is kept in perfect condition with yearly applications of mud plaster by local volunteers. Inside is a simple chapel with hand painted retablos and stations of the cross. A lovely piece of living history, it's a must-see on a visit to New Mexico.
