Zapatista Art in Oventic
NW of San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, Mexico, there is a small Zapatista town, an autonomous village with no support from the Federal Government. They don't want any either. The Zapatista movement is one of autonomy and democracy on a grass roots level. They want to have their own schools with classes taught in their own language, to live with the land, not rule over it, and they value equality of women. Combies make regular runs in the direction of Oventic so it's possible to visit there, but take a passport as you'll be asked for it before you're allowed to enter. The village buildings are covered with wonderful politically inspired murals. This one represents the idea that with education, equality, and freedom, a whole other universe is possible.
