Samantha's Folly in Arugam Bay is a special kind of guesthouse in that it doesn't really consist of a house; instead it has many beds, and many huts, all with access to the sand. We didn't stay here, but I have a feeling my traveling companion would have urged us to had we brought a mosquito net to defend us against the bloodsuckers. We did spend a bit of time lounging in the hammocks while we chatted with one of the staff, listening to the surf and drinking a fresh juice from their small cafe. The owners say it gets pretty crowded in the summer months with a lot of vacationers settling in for the entire season.
Arugam Bay is ideal for beach bums wanting to spend the majority of their time catching waves during the early mornings and late afternoons. I believe the 1000rp ($9) budget accommodations at Samantha's Folly bodes well with that holiday lifestyle of max play/max relax.
Don't forget the sunblock and a good sun hat. The sun can be brutal even on protected skin. And the cost for sunblock in the stores might just set you back 5 nights at Samantha's Folly.
