Peru's Salkantay Trek
If you're up for an adventure of a lifetime, add Peru's Salkantay Trek to your "must do" list. On a recent adventure with Pure Quest Adventures and Lima Tours, we traversed 40 miles through mountain passes and trails on the Salkantay trail before reaching Machu Picchu. Salkantay mountain is the highest peak of the Willkapampa mountain range, part of the Peruvian Andes. At a towering 20,574 feet, Salkantay is known as "Savage Mountain" and is referred to by the local people as a wild mountain. Machu Picchu lies directly north of Salkantay, which makes the Salkantay Trek a less crowded route to Machu Picchu than the well-known Inca Trail.
