Sakurajima Island

Considered the symbol of Kagoshima, the volcano Sakurajima continues to smoke and experience small eruptions several times a day. After a more powerful one in 1914, Sakurajima was no longer an island when its lava flow connected it to the nearby Osumi Peninsula. While it is now connected to the mainland, the Sakurajima Ferry from Kagoshima Port to the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal still runs and the 15-minute ride provides spectacular photo opportunities of the volcano and the Kagoshima skyline.
