Fête Votive
May is the time for Sainte Maxime to honor their patron saint with a weekend of celebrations. In Provence, saints are honored with a mix of religious ceremonies, military parades and folk traditions, a tradition known as a Bravade. In Sainte Maxime it all begins with a parade or corsaires- red, white and blue clad sailors in ancient costumes. After the statue is brought to the church and mass is held, rat-a-tat drum rolls announce the arrival of the troops for mock battles with musket-fire. Fife players arrive and folk dancing is performed by Provençales who fly by in white bonnets and pastel prints dresses.
