There was a settlement in the area at least as early as the Roman conquest of the region, though the city walls and fortifications weren’t erected until the 15th century. A series of pedestrian-only streets, now lined with designer boutiques, sits between the waterfront promenade and the Place des Lices, a short walk inland. Several popular cafés overlook the Place, which is also the site of a market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings.
