Under an hour by car or train from Bordeaux, Saint-Émilion is the perfect day trip for history aficionados and fans of bold red wines. Along the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the town's steep, cobbled streets wind past café-filled squares, old monasteries and a monolithic church. Many of the labels of the surrounding vineyards are hard to find outside of France, so be sure to pick up a bottle for the trip home (and stop at a bakery for a canelé, a custard-filled pastry with a caramelized crust).
