for the families who live along the route of the Paris-Brest, the ride is a quadrennial opportunity for them to come out and cheer. It is like the Boston Marathon, but stretched out over four days and 750 miles. Many of them will setup picnic tables on the side road, filled with homemade cakes, water and coffee, and they will stand out there, all weekend long, in the rain and the wind to shout "allez, allez, allez" , "courage, randonneur!"
and all they might ask for in return is a high five. or a postcard.
