How I Learned to Love a Wax MuseumAfter walking around Reykjavik for a few days, I realized that my knowledge of Viking history was lacking, so I headed over the the Saga Museum to learn more.
I did not expect to find a museum full of wax figures replicating important moments in Viking history. I have to admit, my first thought was that it was kind of cheesy. But towards the end, I discovered that I had learned a lot. The wax figures went from being silly to humanizing the mythical Vikings.
At the end of the exhibit, I learned that the owner was the guy running the ticket counter, and that the museum was his passion project. He even had his 80 year old mother encased in plaster to create a wax model. There was an area where you could put on Viking clothes and take pictures. Feeling the weight of the swords and shields gave me pause to reflect on how challenging life must have been way back when.
Don't let the initial impression of the wax figures deter you. Embrace the museum and you too will enjoy your visit.
