Empúries Ruins

C/ Puig i Cadafalch, s/n, 17130 L'Escala, Girona, Spain

The ruins at Empúries overlook a gorgeous stretch of beach on the Gulf of Roses. The archaeological site is the only one in the region that was home to both Greek and Roman settlements, some of which date as far back as the 6th century B.C.E. In the Greek sections, visitors can explore an ancient marketplace and temple sites. The Roman city is larger and more thoroughly excavated, with some beautifully intact floor mosaics. There’s also a necropolis that was used for 1,200 years and an on-site museum with artifacts uncovered at the site.
