13th Century Maya king
This was the first of the Maya king ruins that I saw in Central America. It was an awesome beginning to an incredible trip. The carvings on the stelae under the simple protective coverings are marvelously preserved. Others, not protected are not original, those having been moved to museums (some stolen) around the world. Master stone carvers have duplicated the ones that were removed so in all there are 7 stelae and 11 alters in this area. These will also give a good introduction to the two Maya calendars.
