Walking down from the hills of Montmartre to north of the Gare Du Nord is metro Chateau Rouge. A neighborhood market filled with West African foods, clothes and music. Deals are made. Plantains and dried fish dominate the marketplace which is split between permanent and temporary sellers. The transient sellers fill the street their wares spread across cardboard boxes and out of suitcases, waiting for any word from the lookouts that the police are coming. Then without a sound they word goes and out and as one they run from the market. 20 minutes later they are back and all returns to normal. From Hallal butchers to knock off beat headphones to bright African fabrics, all is there.
Here you feel closer to Dakar than Paris yet your are only a few metro stops away.
