Mike and I stumbled across Casa das Caldeiras, a unique, stylish café bar in Coimbra last weekend and have already revisited it. As soon as we opened the door, we were impressed. Cleaned up and cleverly lit, the original Babcock and Wilcox boilers which supplied Coimbra’s university hospital with heat from the 1940s loomed large in front of us. Everything else: the walls, curtains, chairs, high wooden ceiling and doors, is black, making the spotlit rusted metal stand out even more.
It opened in November 2013 and has quickly become one of the most trendy places in Coimbra. Drinks are reasonably priced and they have 8 types of gin to choose from plus a range of teas and beers.
The menu is dominated by posh burgers, which I can recommend, along with other light meals and snacks.
