The Royal Ambarrukmo, endorsed by Yogyakarta's reigning Sultan (a governor, in terms of power now) is fit for royalty indeed. As the only 4 star hotel in this laid back Javanese city, it's also one of the best options for a tourist who wants to come home from sightseeing with all the expectations of western comfort fulfilled. It is, to borrow the well-worn cliche, an oasis from the city outside its gates. It's also beautifully designed with a modern aesthetic, yet featuring traditional details which pay homage to the Dutch colonial era that helped to populate this region of Indonesia. The sweeping pool, spa, gym and luxurious restaurant -- with one of the largest breakfast buffets I've ever seen -- are creature comforts worthy of the price per night. Yet above it all is the comfortable guest bed and well appointed rooms, more than fit for a sultan or any royal.
