Beyond the French Riviera are small towns and villages that you can easily explore if you have access to a car.
One May, seven of us rented a car (yes we were cramped in a tiny French model) and we left our hostel in Avignon for a day trip around these villages.
One such village is Roussillon. What you see in this picture is known as ocre-red color and the entire town has red rocks, red stone buildings and red tile roofs.
Set on bright red ocre hills, the village is really cute inside with narrow medieval streets. The center of the village is very small so you can easily wander the village in 1-2 hours.
There's a beautiful 19th century clock and bell tower that is a sight not to be missed. Spend some time here in rural France - enjoy the solitude.
Tip: you can either visit wine county from Avignon or a string of villages and we chose to visit the villages. You can pick from a list of villages in Provence, but make Roussillon part of your visit. You won't regret this ocre-red town. Your hotel/hostel will gladly provide you a map of the route to take.
